Question: Do I need rain gutters?
Answer: Rain gutters are always a great idea. They protect your home from dry rot, more so than the roof itself. Most dry rot occurs in the eaves and corners. Proper installation can prevent most dry rot.
Question: I understand that re-roofing creates a mess, who will clean this up?
Answer: On tear-off we are careful to have everything covered or out of the way and all debris is cleaned up and taken away. This is done on the same day.
Question: What should I be most concerned about when it comes to inspecting an older roof?
Answer: A big concern when it comes to roof inspections is the inability to inspect the roof deck for heat damage, rot or loose decking. While the wood can be inspected from inside the attic space for broken boards or water damage, loose decking can not be determined without removing the shingles and existing felt paper.
As wood becomes moist from humid air and condensation that collects in the attic space, it may swell slightly. As it dries out, the wood returns to its natural position. Over the course of 20 years or so, this swelling and relaxing of the wood can lift the decking nails slightly which may prevent the wood from laying flat.
Question: Can my new roof be installed over the existing shingles or is it better to have them removed?
Answer: A number of factors come into play in making this decision. Older shingles tend to cup as they dry out and age. The new layer will follow the contour of the existing shingles which may cause your new roof to look bumpy or uneven. Also, the existing rows of shingles must have been run straight when installed. Again, the new layer will follow the old pattern and may lead to a visually unacceptable appearance.
Question: What you should look for in a Roofing Contractor?
Answer: Your roof not only protects your home, it also enhances its beauty and influences its value. It is a vital element of your home's design and elegance. Therefore, great care and judgment should be exercised in the proper choice of a professional roofing contractor . . . one who has a reputation for competence and reliability. The contractor should know what products to use in the hostile Ohio environments and how to properly install those systems.
